Sometimes you only have to travel a short distance to journey a long way. This is the case with Parc del Garraf Astronomical Observatory, an extraordinary place with views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Montsià mountains and beyond our Solar System.
A dark sky full of light
When night falls, the Observatory, far from the light pollution of Barcelona’s vast urban area, reveals a landscape that stretches far beyond the horizon. It is then that we can see the Milky Way with the naked eye.
During the day, visitors can enjoy experiences such as a scale model of the Solar System along the GR-5, a walk in which each step represents one million kilometres, bringing astronomy into direct contact with the surrounding landscape.
The Observatory’s educational mission also extends to schools, with practical, interactive activities adapted to all educational levels, from nursery school to upper secondary education. Daytime visits offer the chance to observe the Sun using special filters, experiment with gravity and light, and explore the movements of the Earth and Moon using the tellurium.
At dusk, the experience takes on a different perspective. Night-time visits begin in the planetarium, where an initial introduction helps visitors find their bearings before they venture outside to observe the real night sky beneath the dome that houses the telescope. It is a way of learning about astronomy that turns the discovery of the universe into an unforgettable experience.
Looking at the sky with the Earth in mind
Since 2023, the Observatory has been a signatory to the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (ECST) and, since 2025, has been part of the Barcelona Sustainable Destination programme. These two quality certifications recognise its commitment to a responsible approach to tourism and management.
It is also part of the Astronomy in Parks Network, an initiative that brings knowledge of the night sky to natural areas and raises awareness of the dangers of light pollution through visits, workshops and talks that invite people to discover the universe.
Accessibility is another of its key priorities. Reaching the dome can be difficult for people with reduced mobility. For this reason, the facility offers the option of observing the sky at ground level using an accessible telescope. It can also provide a Joëlette all-terrain wheelchair free of charge to facilitate access to the natural environment. For other specific needs, visitors are advised to get in touch in advance so that the best option can be found and their participation facilitated.
A getaway to look beyond
Visiting Parc del Garraf Astronomical Observatory means discovering the area from a new perspective. During the day, the landscape invites us to walk and explore; when night falls, the darkness opens a window onto the heavens.
An eco-experience that reminds us that the sky is also part of the landscape and that sometimes all we need to do is look up to discover that the universe begins much closer than we think.
