In Alella, vineyards sit alongside woodland and the sea, forming a landscape closely linked to the region’s winemaking tradition. In this setting, the Pujol-Busquets family has been developing the Art Laietà project since 1991: a family-run organic winery located in the heart of the Serralada de Marina Natural Park.
The project is committed to organic viticulture and to overseeing every stage of the winemaking process in order to maintain close ties with the local area.
Viticulture rooted in the landscape
Art Laietà’s vineyards grow on sauló, a sandy soil formed from decomposed granite, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The winery is located on the Can Genís estate, a Noucentista property, and has practised certified organic farming since it was first established.
The vineyard plots are small, follow the contours of the valley and preserve the woodland areas between the vines. This layout encourages biodiversity, helps prevent pest outbreaks and reduces soil erosion.
Since 2012, Art Laietà has also been involved in a project to develop native, resistant grape varieties adapted to climate change, with the aim of reducing treatments, emissions and production losses.
A particular highlight of the project is Celler de les Aus, a range of wines with no added sulphites, which currently includes white, red and sparkling wines such as Puput Pét-Nat, Tallarol, Tallareta Orange and Merla. These names refer to the birds that inhabit the Serralada de Marina Natural Park and contribute to the soundscape of the vineyards.
Wine, the region and culture
Art Laietà is part of the Barcelona Sustainable Destination programme, a commitment that incorporates environmental, social and economic criteria into the management of tourism activities.
Its wine tourism offering invites visitors to discover the project through guided tours, tastings, food pairings and activities related to art, well-being and nature. In this way, the winery opens its doors to visitors and gives them an insight into an approach rooted in the region.
Wine and culture also come together through events such as Microteatre entre vinyes (Microtheatre Among the Vines), which turns different areas of the estate into theatrical venues and combines performances with wine and cava tastings. The Wine Tourism Centre also hosts book launches, workshops and other cultural activities.
The region and sustainability
Art Laietà’s environmental commitment translates into measures covering different areas of its operations. Since 2023, the winery has held ISO 14001 environmental certification and has taken part in initiatives aimed at calculating and reducing its carbon footprint.
Among other measures, Art Laietà has installed around 100 solar panels on the winery roof, reuses approximately 80,000 bottles each year for its wines and cavas, is gradually replacing capsules with wax, and uses lighter bottles.
Roots looking to the future
Located just outside Barcelona and overlooking the Mediterranean, Art Laietà has developed a project that connects wine production with the landscape of Alella and the people who visit it.
From organic farming and research into grape varieties adapted to climate change to the Celler de les Aus range and bottle reuse, sustainability runs throughout the entire process: from vine to bottle.
